Seller Comments...
One of a series of works based on photographs of trees that I took on the same day that I finished the pieces. They were all taken on the high moors around my wife Su's tiny village school on Stanton Moor at around 6.45 am, after I had dropped her off and was returning home. This is taken close to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle which lies within a small circular bank on top of the moor. Nine upright stones (some actually leaning) lie on the inner perimeter of the bank, a tenth stone (prone) lies on the bank. Another standing stone, known as the King Stone, stands on its own to the south-east. It is one of a series of ancient monuments, built 3-4,000 years ago in the Bronze Age, which are spread across Stanton Moor a major concentration of pagan worship. At the sumer and winter solstace driuds and other Earth worshippers travel to the moor to perform their rituals and if they are lucky see the rise of the sun as it looks here. There is a protest site at Stanton Moor, very near to the Nine Ladies in the Peak National Park. Two old quarries, Endcliffe and Lees Cross, are occupied by protestors. The quarrying company wants to re-open the quarries and start blasting again for millstone grit.
