Seller Comments...
A young black guy lies asleep on the window ledge of Roosevelt University in Water Front Chicago, in front of a poster which reads: 'Give me the tools to succeed. I'll Launch My Career. Just Watch Me!' (This is a recent reworking of the piece for a photographic competition in the UK.) The scene struck me immediately as very sad and also very significant. Aside from the obvious poignancy of the image of a black youth asleep under such a poster, I was also struck by the tomb-like nature of the massive window ledge on which he was sleeping. I chose to print it in sepia to place it within the tradition of American photograpic realism of the 1920s and '30s Dustbowl era. I almost didn't take this shot as it seemed like an intrusion on a person's privacy. But I decided it was simply too important to let pass.
