CAROLINE ASHTON
Born in Texas, raised in South America and later traveling and residing in various countries has enriched Caroline Ashton’s development as an artist. Caroline (known as Cookie to many) began painting at an early age and over the years has studied and explored a variety of mediums including watercolors, acrylics, printmaking and ceramics. Painting in oil on large canvases, her current subject matter is figurative and the work is contemporary. Human figures and how they interact and relate to one another represent the content. Caroline is especially interested in engaging the viewer as a participant interpreting her paintings. By weaving faceless figures and bodies together in dynamic movements, costumes and settings, she expertly uses colors and shapes to work her magic. Unlike most painters, Caroline prefers to let her work emerge versus detailed planning and makes frequent changes to maintain spontaneity. She begins by blocking in her shapes with thin washes to establish the composition. She then proceeds by going in and out with transparent or opaque pigments continually layering in paint to achieve luminosity and a kaleidoscope of rich and exciting colors. Caroline comments that overall it is like trying to control the uncontrollable and always being surprised by the outcome.
