"Backlit By The Sun" is a portrait of my friend Robin. I took a photograph
of her sitting on my couch, which I used as a reference for this drawing.
The blinds were drawn in the window behind, so the light was muted
from behind her, making a nice sort of glowing effect. I was trying to
capture that essence of an afternoon moment, soon to pass by.
My inspiration for my technique came mostly from the Pre-Raphaelite
pen and ink illustrators of the eighteen sixties, particularly John Everett
Millais. I used some light pencils on an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of bristol
board to begin. Pen and ink with white gouache brushed over was the
finished medium.
