Artist Info
The Rev. Jonathan R. Almond is pastor of Mathewson Street United Methodist Church located in the heart of down town Providence. He is now in his 36th year in ordained ministry. Jon is a self taught watercolor artist who likes vivid colors and detail in his paintings.
Jon grew up in Pawtucket, RI and currently lives with his wife in Cranston, RI. He began painting while on a study travel trip to the Middle East in 1995. His paintings include scenes from: Middle Eastern countries of Egypt, Israel, Palestine; from European countries of Belgium, France, Great Britain, Greece, and the Netherlands; and the Southwestern United States. He is currently working on a series of scenes from Providence. The first paintings in this series are from Roger Williams Park featuring the carousel and band shell by the lake.
Jon's paintings also include pictures of railroads, many from the classic days of streamliners in the 1950s and 1960s. His picture "Mid Day Commute" shows two New Haven Railroad trains on the mainline near Hillsgrove Airport. A lineman's shanty echoes the outdated one that Jon's father, also a United Methodist minister, got donated from the railroad and moved to their Pawtucket home where it doubled as a garden shed and a place to play. In that same painting, a Budd Rail Diesel Car (RDC) recalls one he rode as a child and an Eastern Airlines Constellation that passes over the trains mirrors the plane he rode to New York for his successful college interview for Ohio Wesleyan University.
