This painting depicts the bond between mother and child. The mother is telling her daughter a story, so the work also pays homage to the tradition of oral storytelling. The concept of genetic memory also worked it's way into this piece. By genetic memory I mean knowledge, thoughts, emotions and worldview that we inherit from our ancestors. Many cultures, past and present, practice some form of ancestor worship, perhaps this piece represents an attempt to placate the spirits of my ancestors?
My style has been variously classified as; visionary art, fantastic realism, fantasy, surrealism, magical realism, female allegorical, and religious art. I was born in Salzburg Austria, was raised in Italy, and currently reside in Minneapolis, MN (USA). This piece - and much of my work - was heavily influenced by my exposure to Italian life and art. I greatly admire the Italian masters of the Baroque Period.
