Excellent condition. Good margins. Printed on off-white laid paper. Two small stains from old matting tape along the reverse upper top margin, well away from image. Very slight toning from previous mat, current mat covers this problem, does not warrant cleaning. In 1971 Seeber commented on this image (1971:104, 135 and Figure 40), attempting to make the argument based on a trial print in her possession that a remarque of a female profile in the left margin of the trial proof is imitated in the craggy canyon wall, upper right. Personally, I think that's pushing the bubble of probability. Fish Creek itself, is located due east of Phoenix, Arizona, and flows through the center of the Superstition Mountains in a northwesterly direction toward the Salt River.
This moonlit night version, represented by the use of both etching and aquatint, is rare. The print that is described in Crafton (1930), is the etched "sunlit" state. No comment upon an etched and aquatint image is made. Seeber (1971:135) does make mention of this print and state, and held a copy of it in her file, however, that print was neither signed nor titled. Of the "etching only" state, in Seeber's possession, it was dated in Burr's handwriting as 12/25/26.
