Based on a photograph taken from the rear of the famous Pultney Bridge (1769-74) in Bath, looking towards the U shaped 'weir' as the river Avon suddenly falls by a metre, with a small boat just above it. The bridge is to a design by Robert Adam, inspired by the Rialto Bridge in Venice. It is also reminiscent of the Ponte Veccio in Florence - lined with shops on both sides - the rear claddings of which are visible from the rear elevation, seen here. In 1792 Thomas Baldwin added a story and altered the shop fronts on the bridge. The Victorians did thier bit to destroy parts of the original upper structure and the bridge was restored from this and some early 20th century adlterations in 1975.
