Crescent City is on the coast of northern California, almost the last city before Oregon. The coastline there is dotted with seastacks, many with pine trees growing on them - distant memories of once being joined to the mainland. This one has eroded with time, and in the thirty years since I first painted this, it has broken into three pieces. The courageous trees are still growing, but have fallen aside. I stop there on the way to visit my brother in Oregon, and ponder the mysterious passage of time.
