The fifth of a series of idealised meditations on the 'Ideal City' of Bath - this piece based on photographs of John Wood's Royal Circus (renamed The Circus) the first 360 degree domestic architecture in Britain, based on its front elevation circle on the outer circumference of Stone Henge. The Georgian city of bath was begun by the architect/builder Wood in the 1730s, in order to realise his vision of an ideal city based on Druidical, Classical and Freemasonic symbols . "Et in Arcadia Ego" translates as 'I too lived in Arcadia'! Wood died just as the Circus was being started and it was completed by his son Wood the Younger. In druidical and freemason terms the cresent shape of the Royal Crescent symbolised the moon, while the circle of the Circus represents the Sun. The Circus also carries all three orders of classical column, plus hundreds of freemasonic and classical carvings on its curving pediments. [CLICK ON THE IMAGES FOR LARGER FORMAT VERSIONS]
