Alice is very dazed and disoriented in this rendition of Wonderland. The Hatter’s expression is hidden from view and everything from the cat in the tree, the rabbit under the table, and even the colours used, give the painting an innocent appearance, which presents a stark contrast to Alice herself who appears in a provocative pose and attire.
Much like Lewis Carol’s story itself, the painting is purposely vague and open to interpretation.
