Mother whales are known to swim beneath their calves in order to help them breathe. Whales are mammals, and as such need to breathe air through their nostrils, unlike fish that breathe through gills. Whales are capable of holding their breath for many minutes, but must eventually surface. This pairing of the mother and calf is a familiar scene among whale watchers.
