'Mount Vernon Place - Baltimore, MD': Rewarded the princely sum of $500. for his winning design, Robert Mills worked the following 15 years building the first major monument in America to commemorate the Father of our country (this idea was originally conceived in 1809) and was realized on November 25, 1829, just 10 years after George Washington passed away. Centered in Mount Vernon Place, just 10 blocks north of the Baltimore inner harbor, this area is bordered by the elegance of many 19th century structures of prominence. The Peabody Conservatory of Music face the stately Walters Art Museum at the perimeter of the many gardens and fountains that grace Mount Vernon Place. Even today this is a pulsating venue for numerous public gatherings of social and cultural significance.
