This piece is actually a study, an experiment. Years ago, when I was a teenager, I made a steel sculpture of an Aborigine with a head reminiscent of the heads on Easter Island. I had always liked the simplicity and elegance of those heads. They also seemed to be utterly emotionless. "The Committee" was an experiment to see if even those stony faces could evoke feelings. Each of the heads and spears is identical. All I did was change their positions relative to each other.
I believe it was very successful. When I look at those faces, I can see pride, fear, distrust, caution and curiosity. I can see a military attention and a casual ease. In fact, if you change their position relative to the viewer (by placing the piece either below or above eye level) they can appear to be either looking up at you in awe or looking down their noses at you.
The piece is made of mild steel that has been completely worked over with a torch. I sandblasted the steel, heated it up with the torch and sealed it with oil. It was then bolted to a marble base that I had chiseled to shape.
