This new work represents a subtle shift in composition and spatial awareness.
The works are the result of the creation of a dialogue between abstract shapes and representational form to render female sexuality. The resulting hard-edged, painstakingly painted canvases are clean and graphic. The style is deliberately employed to create a heightened sense of ambiguity and hopefully sensuality in the paintings.
Using compositional cropping and flat planes of colour from a restricted palette, forms have been reduced to their essential components. Space is becoming increasingly important to the work; it is manipulated and pushed from positive to negative by what surrounds or interacts with it. The golden pattern is key to this, as the vine-like forms weave in and out of the figures they appear to create a deeper sense of space, while simultaneously emphasizing the flatness of the canvas. The use of metallic paint adds to this as the light plays across the surface adding an extra sense of movement, the surface of the work constantly changing as you move around it. All this uncertainty creates and excites the idea of the unknown and provokes the possibility of an unwritten narrative.
The paintings attempt to capture a moment. The fluid shapes of the figures in work are so immediate; however each mark is meticulously considered and crafted to exert an evocative sense of a suspended moment.
