‘Opposing Arches’, © 1978 Sam Smith: From the moment one pulls a camera to the eye, the act of illusion making begins. Perhaps the most basic element of this act, is to crop (or edit) to decide what remains within the viewfinder, ie. the resulting print. From my perspective, this is not only someone in the intense throws of looking, but the more formally considered, arches in opposition to one another, which is of concern and interest. In the end a photo is but a two dimensional object, a substrate with color resting upon it: it can be turned in multiple ways, crushed and rephotographed, burned in a controlled fashion, and presented in a 'final' form (if one hasn’t time for all this, the image may also find its way to the circular file). Using certain aspects of 'reality' as matrix upon which this act of a quest for the illusion take place, may be one of the most dynamic photo involvements I've ever experienced.
