San Estevan was a black priest(unknown if he was African American, or from Africa) who came upon the Acoma settlement in Western New Mexico. He was immediately killed since the people had not seen a black man. Later, news of his death reached the bishop and other priests were sent to the pueblo. As part of colonization, a mission was established for the people of Acoma. It was named in honor of San. Estevan. No one is allowed to tour the mission, except for the main santuary when it is not in use. This is a side view of the living space entrance and the balcony.
