This painting shows mother and daughter on a wood gathering outing in the snow. The briskness of the cold is demonstrated in the rosiness of their cheeks and with the mother clutching her fist to her body in reaction to the bite of the coldness. The daughter is being helpful by doing her share of wood toting (child-sized sticks). You can just make out faintly the shapes of structures in the background through the fading light and inclement weather.
