Flame #191 received Best of Show at the Art, Science & Technology show in Mill Valley in 2001.
The Flame series of images were made with custom computer algorithm created by the artist. Each is an "artificial organism" with a genetic code. They were not designed in the normal sense, rather they were evolved, or discovered, by a process of random mutation. The computer generated many draft quality images and the artist merely selected his favorites, and fed these back into the system. After viewing many thousands of images, the very best were rendered at high resolution, a process that takes about 24 hours. The algorithm solves a non-linear recursive set equation. The many parameters to this equation comprise the genetic code. The software was released as open source and is a standard part of the linux operating system, though a much improved version is available from FLAM3.COM.
