I first turned my attention to acrylic portraits using photo-transfers of gay men for a bright, bold series of portraits called Pretty Boys, the summer I graduated from Emily Carr. I was living in the West End of Vancouver, dancing til all hours of the morning with beautiful gay men, going to "doggie picnics", shopping on Robson Street (of all places!) and helping my playmates pick out hot guys on "gaydar" ... the gay equivalent to "lavalife".. sortof... I actually met a number of my models there... on gaydar... I got a kick out of being the only straight girl with an ad.
It all just seemed to make sense, that I would paint portraits of the people with which I had surrounded myself.
