Invited by the president of the Union of Polish Art Photographers (ZPAF) to tour their Polish galleries with a foto exhibition, 'Independent American Photography', I researched, assembled and journied there ,1980, with the exhibit. Upon hearing of the worker strikes in the shipyards of Gdansk, I headed there from Warsaw to photograph these events. This work was made about fifteen mins. after he completed weeks of sucessfully negotiating with the Polish Communist Gvt. for the right to form free trade unions, 'Solidarity'. Walesa recieved the Nobel Peace prize, 1983 and was elected Poland's first democratically elected President in 1989. Lech Walesa was ironically denied his bid for the Presidency in 1994 by Aleksander Kwasniewski, a former Communist. He has not returned to an active roll in Polish politics since. This portrait was taken into the permanent collection at the Museum of the History of Photography - Krakow, Poland, 1997.
