Ravi Shankar (1920- ): Born Robindra Shankar to a well off Brahman family in what is now Bangladesh, he learned early to play several instruments. Upon his return from a European stint with his brothers and fathers musical and dance troupe, 1939, he made the decision to forego further development of dance in favor of learning sitar. Learning sitar in the old 'guru shishya' style, characterized by isolated and highly disciplined study in a non-religeous reverence for the guru, Baba Allaudin Kahn, he emerged some seven years later as Ravi Shankar. Having written compositions for Yehudi Menuhin, Jean Pierre Rampal and Hosan Yamamoto, he also collaborated with Phillip Glass and George Harrison, of 'Beatles' fame. Still prodigiously creating music and performing the world over, he is indeed the cultural embassador to India and a musical treasure to the world. His daughter, Anoushka Shankar is a most respected sitarist in her own right and his other daughter is of considerable notoriety in the West, as singer Nora Jones.
