I live in Fort Myers, Florida and have started a business as an ARTISTS REP. I presently hold a full time job, working for the City of Sanibel, Florida as the Code Enforcement Officer. My wife and I moved to Fort Myers in March of 1994 from Philadelphia, Pa. where I retired after 23 1/2 years with the Philadelphia Police Department and District Attorneys Office. I plan on retiring in a few years and to fall I back on this new venture upon retirement.
My wife and I have had a passion for visiting galleries for years and on a recent trip to Park City, Utah, I started putting this new venture together. We travel on weekends from coast to coast in Florida and enjoy meeting gallery owners and artists. I am assembling a portfolio of artists to represent in the venture. This is how I am conduct this business.
I receive a sample of the work (up to three pieces) from the artist along with photographs or other representation of the works available for sale. I will select galleries that fit the work of the artist and show it to the gallery owners. The gallery will PURCHASE pieces as I do not, I said I do not put work in a gallery on consignment. This will create an instant cash flow for the artist and there is no contact between the gallery and artist. The price of work that I sell will be determined by the artist. All works will be sent to my house, I will inspect the work and deliver it to the gallery and collect payment upon delivery. The check will be deposited and as soon as it clears, I will send payment to the artist. I work on a 20% commission from the artist. If objects are priced right they will sell, if overpriced they will not sell.
I make individual arrangements with each artist, and that is a big part of this venture. My relationships with artist to be built over time and grow as our relationship grows.
