Frankly,you are right on the money.There has been a trend with the introduction of clip art, for clients to see how they fare in the commercial art world on their own, in an attempt to save money by eliminating Graphic Designers.I actually spent 1.5 years in college,in the commercial art field only to discover that I made 2-3x as much money in one year as a chemist.Do I think that a Chemist position is worth 2-3x more than a graphic designer with equivelant experience?No!However, shortages,supply and demand dictate salaries in the real world.Right now,a nurse has more opportunities than a chemist,but only because they are in demand.The demand for Good Graphic Artists has increased.I think it will increases even more. I don't know how long it will take,but I don't think it will be more than 2-5 years based on what I have seen over the last 20 years.Good Graphic Designers, as well as Good Photographers, play an essential role in the field of Advertising Design.
