Hi Judith!
I think your work will probably be safe, but here is my method for shipping paintings:
Canvas or print or panel wrapped in plasic *I recycle bags from art store.
Sandwich this between 1-2 inch insulating foam (from any of the big renovator stores)and tape this sandwich all around in each direction with packing tape.
Now, Make your own box. I raid the recycling bin behind Pier 1 and take really large boxes. I make sure the print on the cardboard is on the inside. I place the "sandwich" on the cardboard and wrap it up. Cut the ends to make flaps and then use lots of clear packing tape to hold it securely. Your box will be custom made so that it leaves no room for sliding around.
Label and ship.
The insulation foam is much cheaper than foam-core and it's quite dense, but very light. This method not only prevents bending but insures that nothing will pierce your work. Believe it or not, the postal guys are not so careful...hahahahaha
I think it was Al Lofsness who once had a painting pieced right through his packaging. The cardboard and foam combined is very good insurance against damage.
I have shipped paintings literaly all over the world and have never had anything damaged.
Good Luck!
Laura
