Chambers' installation will be from early May - August, 2006. It will be two-part – the first works will be up through June. The second group will go up for July and August. It happens to coincide with and be a part of New York's Asian Contemporary Art Week from May 22 - 27th. Phillips de Pury's auction will be held on May 12th.

Chambers Hotel is a design hotel which opened 5 years ago in midtown Manhattan. Chambers showcases some 500 works of original art by emerging artists from around the world. Each of the hotel floor landings features a site-specific installation by a different artist. So, it's a fascinating mix of artists and works and design.

This hidden jewel in Midtown, which now more than ever, draws a savvy, smart, discerning, fashionable and culturally-oriented crowd of locals and travelers from around the globe.

The hotel will update in a non-traditional way - - in a way that is entirely "Chamber-esque" and reflective of the eclectic and "downtown/uptown" nature and vibe and look of the hotel.

So, rather than a new paint job or different candy in the minibar, Chambers will modernize with a provocative and exciting installation of Chinese contemporary art from the collection of Chambers co-owner, Richard Born. Born has amassed an important collection of works by Li Shan, Qi Zhilong, Rong Rong, Yue Minjun, Wang Jinsong, Wang Guangyi, Cang Xin, Wang Qingsong, Gu Wenda, Hong Hao, Zhana Dali and Xue Song and others. Works by many of these artists were auctioned at Sotheby's Contemporary Arts Asia sale on March 31 and exceeded sales expectations and were a huge success.

Now, to reflect one of the latest and most dramatic developments in the international cultural arena - the arts and cultural explosion from China - Chambers will not only be known as an art-oriented hotel but will solidify its reputation as a hotel that has its pulse on the latest worldwide art trends / scenes.

The installation will be curated by the China Institute. Phillips de Pury is involved because they will be holding their first ever auction of Chinese contemporary art in May. China Institute, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, is involved because it is relocating close to Chambers. To highlight this celebration, a work of art from the collection of hotelier Richard Born will be auctioned off, to benefit the China Institute, by Phillips de Pury.
So, it's really 5 years for Chambers, Phillips entry into the contemporary Chinese art world and China Institute's auspicious 80th anniversary and relocation. It's a three-fold celebration and collaboration.
