. . . if you've got the cash, and you like to play, then this is your game.
But, as for myself, I don't have a spare three grand to toss into the wind for a good time.
Events, publications, appearances, etc. are a game for the priviledged/lucky (TRANSLATION: affluent, funded, good-retirement-plan enabled, sugar momma/daddy-supported, financed by another career, etc.)
Most artists don't fall into this category.
The ultimate determining factor for who gets accepted is who has the money. Simple as that.
There are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many worthy artists out there, and these producers/editors know this. Chances are: any who have the sense to photograph their work, fill in the application, and communicate are also good enough to be shown, so it's pretty much a nobrainer for these places. JUST SEND OUT INVITATIONS, AND BAM!!, ALL THESE GOOD ARTISTS WILLING TO PAY APPEAR!!!
No jury really needed. It's who has the money. THAT'S THE GAME.
These days, any fairly intelligent person can become a fairly good artist. There's no shortage of good artists.
So, David, .... if you want to aim towards making money, I'd recommend that you start YOUR OWN EVENT, then send out your own invitations, and get in on some of this paying action.
Don't be an entrant. Be a producer of events. That's where the money is.
