About ARNOLD VAIL. I took a painting workshop from him in
Glenrose, Tx. in October 1978.

He used housepaint to paint his pictures. He started using housepaint to paint pictures during the World War II, due to dearth of the paint itself
and money. He painted buildings and then went on to works of art. He painted various works of art for the government under their funding.

He would use a gallon of whitish gray paint to begin with; then take 9 small cups or widemouth jars of that paint and mix oil pigments in to get his colors. He mixed the major colors up and then from those mixed variations of those colors as he worked through the painting.

He also used much larger brushes than artist brushes. He demonstrated
applying each change of color in the landscapes we did. It was a 3-day
workshop as best I remember and everyday was a picnic. We completed
several pictures and carried our little jars of paint home to continue
to learn.

Arnold said there were no "ugly colors"; it all depended on what they
were next to. Dull, muddy colors helped showcase brilliant touches of
color next to them. They helped calm down the pictures.

Arnold wore a ballcap with fishing lures attached & I wasn't sure if we
were going fishing or painting. He wore a plaid cowboy shirt with the sleeves rolled up, jeans and round-toed workmen's boots. He was fascinating to listen to with all his stories, very much downhome.

Just thought you might like to know, if others of his
students hadn't checked in.
