I am just finishing the Daniel Silva book, THE MESSENGER. In it, Silva mentions a "thumbprint" of Van Gogh -- i.e., in his last works painted in Auvers, Van Gogh would have, literally, dozens of paintings in his room above the Cafe Ravoux. He used to lean them against the wall, one atop the next. He was working so quickly that the previous paintings were never quite dry when he laid the new ones on top. Therefore, if you look carefully, you can see a crosshatched impression of canvas on the surface of the paint (on the very edge of the canvas).
Is this indeed correct ??? Please excuse my ignorance if this is something that is well known.
