Boston's Gallery of Social and Political Art
Confronts Stereotypes of the Middle East

Songs of the Sand highlights visual perspectives of the Middle East

Boston, MA – The Gallery of Social and Political Art along with curators Skye Schulte and Joseph Oliveira are pleased to announce the opening of Songs of the Sand: Visual Perspectives of the Middle East, to take place October 21st through December 3rd. Songs of the Sand offers a glimpse of the social and political issues of the Middle East through the eyes of artists who have lived in, traveled to, or been deeply affected by this region and its people.

This show brings together artists with various connections to the Middle East, including a woman who lives in Saudi Arabia, a human rights worker living in occupied Palestine, and an anti-war demonstrator to name a few. Songs of the Sand encompasses a more personal view of the region than the usual sound bites and news images allow. These are the voices that won't be silenced; songs just waiting to be sung; the songs of the sand.

Judges included Dr. Gregory Payne, Yasmine Asem, and Hilary Rantisi. The opening for Songs of the Sand will be Saturday, October 21st from 6:00-9:00pm. The Gallery is free and open to the public for general viewing on Wednesdays (5-8), Saturdays (2-6), and Sundays (2-6) through December 3rd. The Gallery of Social and Political Art is located in the Community Church of Boston Building at 565 Boylston Street in Boston, MA.

The Gallery of Social and Political Art is an organization consisting of volunteers who work together to create social and political art exhibitions that promote social justice within the community. The Gallery sees itself as part of a broad ongoing struggle against all forms of social injustices. Though highly supportive of artists, the Gallery does not showcase them or their work: they showcase their concerns about social justice. Additional events are also planned during the show, including performances in Middle Eastern dance and a presentation on the role of women in Middle Eastern society. More information on the show can be found at www.gspaboston.org
