For example:

I look at my background. I ask which color is harmonious. I mix it. Not quite right. Lighter. No, lighter. No, tint with a bit of this or that to harmonize more. Hell, that darkened it, so now lighten it to keep not only color harmony but contrast harmony.

Or.... can't see lower portion against bacground, so now for some cheapo highlighting attempts with lines. Sort of comic-book mentality here. Blocks of color,... not painterly technique. Pure color feel and transition via exact color choices, I suppose like Cizzane.

As I said, amateurish. More like a mathematician trying to paint the best happy face he can.
