Mercedes is set to produce a convertible variant of the McLaren SLR this summer, according to a recent report by The Car Connection. Although no details have been officially released, the convertible SLR is likely to resemble the SLR cabrio concept, pictured, that made its debut in 1999 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Mercedes will more than likely eschew a folding hardtop roof in favor of a lightweight softtop to better fit the SLR's performance image - and not add any more weight than necessary. Mercedes won't be changing the 5.5-liter supercharged V8, but it is unclear if the convertible will get the 650 horsepower version that powers the SLR 722 or the 626 horsepower version from the standard SLR.
