I have been trying to figure out what old painting I have and am wondering what it is and if it worth anything in it's current state. I have had this painting for a while, it was passed down to my mother and to me. The story goes that my great aunt Edith was a secretary for the head of Curtis publishing, (in Phildelphia I think). And he had a picture of a woman lying on a bed in his office, but he didn't like it, so he gave it to her. Well she didn't like it either, but she was an artist, so eventually she painted her own oil painting over it. So I finally thought to look at the back of it and see if there were any clues to what it might me. The painting underneath is clearly an oil painting. You can see thick patches of paint that have nothing to do with the picture she painted. I do think I can see the outline of the woman in the lake. Also at the bottom right hand corner she painted some white Daiseys, which just look like they are covering up a signature. So I turned it over and looked at the frame. The picture measures about 2.5 ' by 3.5'. In the upper left hand corner written on the frame is the name ADavies. Also there is a note in the middle of the frame that is hard to make out.. Something about trying something new..., the year 1905 is written on the frame in several places. In the upper left hand corner of the canvas is some writing which I beleive belonged to my aunt. But in the middle of the picture in different handwriting is the number p4281. Any significance to that? Is this painting worth anything?
