I think you might be referring to Sir Francis Bacon, the English Renaissance author, philosopher and father of inductive reasoning.
Francis Bacon the Irish/Anglo painter might be referred to as visionary, maybe, but not a "thinker". His work still influences contemporary artists. Francis Bacon the artist was not even born a century ago. Even so, I can't think of anything lacking in an artist who may be influenced by Bacon the "Thinker". Thinking is good. A creative person may find inspiration in anything, this does in no way suggest a lack of vision.
