I sell my art on line, but as a new media artist who works fast I have well over 1000 artworks on display on my five sites - including this one -and get millions of hits each year in order to generate relatively small sales. The bottom line is millions of people browse but only a tiny number buy!
But in spite of my relatively high profile on the web and appearance of my works on numerous page 1-5 Google art searches, and the very positive feedback I get from artists and critics on line around the world, there is absolutely no way I could earn a living as an on-line artist as things stand.
Secondly those works of mine that sell on line tend to be landscapes, cityscapes/architecture, portraits of internationally known individuals (especially musicians and actors) and abstracts, and the most popular art styles tend to be surrealism, expressionism and impressionism.
Finally, three quarters of my work sells to US East/West Coast US big city people, which may be just because of the nature of my work, but I suspect it is also because such individuals are rich, cultured and above all adventurous enough to shop on line for a unique work of art.
So live shows remain the best way to sell art for artists of all kinds. But what the web does provide is the opportunity for less establihed artists to get their work seen and critiqued by a wide spectrum of individuals who would not normally view the artist's work and to respnd in kind and engage in the wider international community.
