Its all about the money for them, and NOT about the sales for the Artist. They are a well run organization that will take a few thousand off you for a few feet of wall space, and possibly an entire wall:-) Depending on how much you pay them of course.
The problem is, you can hang your paintings in the most wonderful of all galleries across North America(which I refer to as profitable morgues) and most likely make very little in sales. Unless you are already established, its a tough market to crack. I have found many artists having more success online, keeping their asking fees at a reasonable rate and moving some of their work this way, taking their work out to the public is also a unique way to make sales. Waiting for something to sell off of a wall can use up your resources quickly.
During the current administration for the usa government, its pretty much killing off the Arts in both America and Canada. Funding has gone out the door, and Artists are really having a tough time. BUT on a brighter note, its almost over, and a change is happening, so now is a good time to invest into your website, portfolio, presentation, restock your work, and prepare for a new opportunity in the future...if that is what you are after(sales) paint your heart out as sales will return to Artists...eventually.:-)
