I few years back I bought artwork from an artist named Stephanie Gardner...oil on canvas, contemporary aesthetic and ORIGINAL. I paid a goodly amount for it; also, the artist made a big deal about signing a receipt/contract that specified care, potential use in shows, etc.
So imagine my surprise when I found out the same artist now sells print reproductions that look EXACTLYlike this original. I think this is just wrong: it certainly violates the "spirit" of my purchase and, in my mind, is basically art fraud. I bought an ORIGINAL piece, not the first in a series of 400.
A few professional artists I know have been aghast about this... what does everyone else think? Anyone ever have a comparable situation?
Footnote: the "original" has been moved from our living room foyer to a downstairs bathroom (but probably only until my children want to put up a Doodlebops poster or the like! That's how disgusted I am about the whole affair.)
