Hi,
I understand your concern but the artist always retains the copyright on a work of art. Your could have paid for the copyright when you purchased the painting, for a large fee, and then it would have remained unprinted in any form unless you decided to make prints.
As far as I can see, you should be celebrating this turn of events. Should that print become very popular or well known, the resale value of your original will sky-rocket. No reproduction, no matter how well done is going to compare with the original. Get it back in the living room and claim bragging rights...you can tell anyone who admires the work that it is the one and only original and everyone else will have to make do with a print.
Also, you can say that you have chosen your piece very wisely, as an artist will only go to the expense of making reproductions for their best work. It's a win/win situation for you.
It's not the artist's fault, nor the gallery's that you did not know how the art world works when you bought an original. It will get ruined in the bathroom and you will have shot yourself in the foot so to speak.
Cheers,
Laura
