At first I was thinking that you may have a Parrish oil, but when I saw Davies in your message, I am wondering if you have an Arthur Bowen Davies, who was an American artist during the 1800's and early 1900's. He did use women and water in many of his artworks. It would take a professional restorer to be able to remove enough of the newer painting to be able to tell and I am not sure if even the best restorer can remove new paint without doing even minimal harm to the original. (But please don't do this yourself.) He is a well known listed artist, and I do hope that you have discovered one of his paintings! The value will depend of of course if it is an authentic Davies, (or someone else notable), the condition, and the subject matter.
I hope you post an update to this board with your findings.
Take care,
Grace Tyree
