1. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic Confidence) (Paperback)
by Betty Edwards

This book can teach you to draw even though you feel you have little talent and doubt that you could ever learn. If you enjoy drawing but have no been able to get much beyond a childlike level, it will show you how to gain the skill you have always wanted. If you are already drawing as a professional artist or as an artist-in-training, it will give you greater confidence in your ability and will deepen your artistic perceptions.

2. Draw: How to Master the Art (Paperback)
by Jeffery Camp

This is a most valuable book in the how to master the art world. It has many fun exercises to work on and many illustrations. If you are a beginner in art, like I am, I beleive this will be the best book on the subject

3. Arrighi's Running Hand: A Study of Chancery Cursive, Including a Facsimile of the 1522 "Operina" with Side by Side Translation & an Explanatory Supplement to Help Beginners in the Italic Hand (Paperback)
by Paul Standard
This book does indeed seem to be the last of it's kind. It is very specifically a book about one particular elegant form of calligraphy. While it has the feel that it was handmade just for you and is indeed beautiful, for the price it costs to obtain a copy today, it is not practical for everyone to hunt it down. The entire book is devoted to recapturing the "running hand."

4. Calligraphy: The Art of Lettering With the Broad Pen (Paperback)
by Bryon J. MacDonald
This book is a great way to start learning how to use calligraphy. Try it and see!

5. Seasons of Light (Lighted Path Collection) (Hardcover)
by Thomas Kinkade
This collection , accompanied by passages from various literary pieces,is a neat little book that manages to convey an introduction to the art of Thomas Kinkade.

6. Pablo Picasso (Art for Children) (Paperback)
by Ernest Lloyd Raboff
A brief biography of the famous artist accompanies reproductions and analyses of several of his works.

7. Watercolors Step By Step (Paperback)
by Kolan Peterson
Walter Foster Press
Another great Foster press book with many pictures for the young reader to follow.
Note: Some Walter Foster books go out of print and new artists are featured. In this case, any watercolor book in the beginner’s series would be suggested.

8. Fractals: The Patterns of Chaos: Discovering a New Aesthetic of Art, Science, and Nature (A Touchstone Book) (Paperback)
by John Briggs
Technically this book is good. The images, however, are staggeringly beautiful. I think Dr. Briggs teaches esthetics, which is the study of beauty. Of any book on fractals I have read, this is by far the most beautiful. I really liked this book.

9. The Art of Sculpture: Visual Arts (Voyages of Discovery No 7) (Hardcover)
by Scholastic Books

Great for art classroom, for student or teacher.
