I never understand why artists show their paintings on the internet without frames, even so they are intended to be framed. Contemporary paintings that have a painted edge are intended not to be framed but never show the edge. If one considers that most punters lack the ability to visualize a framed image on their wall then one also has to consider that the artist lacks the ability to sell.
I have never seen a Gallery that shows intended framed paintings without a frame so why should that be different on the internet? The other way around would be more logical as in a gallery one can always explain the wisdom of having ‘naked’ paintings hanging on the wall.
I feel that a painting and its frame are one and can not be excluded and therefore great care should be taken to find the right frame. A wrong frame does destroy an otherwise good painting. A great deal of effort is put into the making of frames, some are artwork by them self, ostentatious and overdone and therefore diminishing the image, as can be seen quite often. Others enhance the image. The right selection is in most cases down the artist but not all of them know what works and what doesn’t.
Any interested buyer on the net could be confronted with a ‘finished’ painting, even so the painting is send without the frame, but at least the buyer is guided to something that woks and not something he/she has to figure out for them self’s.
I know I am the only one on the internet that shows framed paintings, but perhaps that’s the reason I managed to sell ever so often.
Below is the first page when I was still running a website. The idea was just click and open a painting and not getting people lost like on so many websites. Now I just do the odd commission.
