I am a young artist, soon to recieve my bachelor's degree. I have agreed to take on an illustration project for a relative of a friend. It will be a 14 page book plus a cover, and I will be using oil pastels. I've been researching rates, and it seems that the industry standards are much higher than I am comfortable charging. The client is a self-publisher, working with a tiny company headed by another family friend. Most illustrators charge over $100 per page, and I could not ask for that. The book will most likely have a small run unless it sells very well.
I feel that as an unestablished artist who is acquainted with the client, I should reduce rates significantly. However, I have heard that professionals really dislike amateurs who will take projects at low rates and undercut their business. I will also be getting exposure out of the deal, so I am thankful for the opportunity and don't want to ask for more than they are willing to pay.
I am thinking of asking $25 per page. Do any other emerging artists do illustration, and how do you determine your rates?
