I think it has a LOT to do with income. Let's face it, you need a lot of extra cash to be able to drop $1000 on a painting. Small cities have less wealth.
And yes I can get away from the "inbreeding" and "small minds" and do much better in a larger city. If it wasn't for the excellent school systems, low crime, and general good hearted people of Iowa, I would do it. Family will always come before art.
Lived in a large city once. After being threatened at gun point, almost pulled from my vehicle at a stop light, dead rotting corpse found in my apt complex, heard gun shots weekly, and dealt with general rudeness daily, I decided it was time to get the hell out. And this was all in a nice part of town.
