Hello Alice,
Interesting question. I have a site: http://www.kateorr.com
featuring Australian Art and world artists offering both original works and reproductions. I have about 200 visitors per day but less than one percent buy. I have secure link encrypted buying capacity for safe purchases. Personally I think the ability to choose my paintings on the net from my arm chair is appealing. Obviously the mob don't agree. I have only been up since late November, so perhaps I can't really talk with any authority. Anyway, at this moment, my shares aren't keeping up with Amazon dot.com.
Avid art lovers like going to exhibitions and enjoy personal browsing but a large majority of persons buy reproduction art without that personal touch. Anyway, that's my 20 cents worth. I gather from the net that in the U.S. the Internet is an extension of already well established businesses. I know e-commerce is growing but people are still pretty scared about internet fraud. After all, do you know who the hell I am. I can tell you that I am........ but you really don't know. I buy on the net when something really grabs me but then I feel safe about doing so. Maybe socialisation for e-commerce will take longer than the experts predict.
Bye for now and happy buying. Best wishes, Kate Orr, Perth, Western Australia.
