Subject: Sorry for your troubles, Coloristic
I read your posting; sadly, I'm not surprised. Because most artists
see the world in a more beautific (ergo naive) way, we are targets
for charletons who really have no conscience. The best thing artists
can do is exactly as you suggested, DO. YOUR. HOMEWORK. Remember, that
as much as your art is your heart, it's also a valuable commodity
that provokes this sort of mercinary behaviour in others. We've all
heard of stories of art becomming extremely valuable and some people
want a piece of that. Also, artists, never, ever let a gallery owner
make you feel small, no matter how intimidating they may be, or how nice
a gallery is, remember, without artists there would be no galleries.
There are a lot of people out there making money off other's creative
talents. So, don't go out there with a pessimistic or defensive
attitude, keep that optimism about the world, that is what makes you
the unique artist you are. When someone offers you an opportunity
that appears to be too good to be true, thank them graciously and tell
them you need some time to think about it. Then do everything you can
(start with what Colorific suggested) and then go forward based on an
informed choice.
Much artistic success to all of you!
