A hundred years from now, that will be a question we won't be hearing! LOL
I've read about the distain critics hold re: "mere" illustrators. When I was growing up Norman Rockwell was just the guy who happened to have the "swellest" job in America making covers for The Saturday Evening Post!
Now, about 40 years later, after reading about him, studying his work, his talent as a 20th century ARTIST is unsurpassed IMHO. If anyone has a doubt check out the many fine books on Rockwell, I have 3. And I tell you his skill at depicting facial expressions alone is utterly amazing. He captured a period in time in America which reflected the uncertainty of war to the smallest pleasures of this life; dating, ice cream parlors, telling a story with wit, humour and nostalgia. Certainly many of his works I consider fine art/high art; the little girl before the mirror. Museums across this country are "rediscovering" Rockwell. Andrew Wyeth is another maligned artist.
