...and although it is receiving quite a bit of criticism for the way the numbers were "guestimated", I tend to believe it. In fact, I would not doubt that the numbers of civilians killed in Afghanistan were even higher. I have heard other estimates as high as 6,000.
I had a conversation with a friend the other day, about the possibilities of nuclear war between India & Pakistan. His thought was that if things were more "harmoious" in Afganistan (if we were not at war), there would be a great deal of interest by the US (and other countries)in seeing a nuclear war break out. A Live Experiment so to speak and NIMBY! Interesting thought...
