You have described the problem quite well. How does one value
a painting. Speaking strictly as a dealer I would answer that I set
a price because experience tells me I can sell this particular work
for a profit without regarding the artist.
One could make a case that all art should be unsigned so that it
could only be valued for itself. This will not happen so we must place
values based on "what could I sell it for" . It is easier to sell
a known artist of course.
The problem for the artist is simple. The public likes a certain kind
of painting and will pay for the type of work that they like. By and large]
this is figurative, realistic, landscape or marines or florals.
If you want to paint modernistic paintings, youmust face up to the
brutal fact that this is hard to sell.
The collector has a different problem. He [collective noun] can either
buy known and proven work or he can go into the unknown an buy modernistic
works. If he chooses the modern works, he will have trouble ever
realizing his investment should he want to sell at some future date.
