I'm not too sure I agree with your outlook. Being an artist representative in New York City, I've seen plenty of works in the metropolitan area (modern/surreal/abstract) sold easily. Obviously, this depends on the market. I'm not too sure that Landscapes and Marines do to well here. Also, there is certainly a large boom over here, and many New York Art buyers are of the younger generation. (Trends, just like everything else)
I do agree, however, on the dealer's perspective on pricing, I'm just not too sure I agree
