I wish I did have a solution. Obviously, experience is extremely valuable when placing a value on a painting, and I agree that artists should listen to the dealer and when in disagreement a compromise should be attempted. Another reason I think that artists overprice their work is that there is a combination of ego ("I can paint better than so and so, so my paintings should be more expensive") combined with a feeling of insecurity and the suspicion that you might NOT be as good as you think after all, the dread that you might never sell anything and be forced to sweep floors for a living, and the fear that by UNDERpricing you might give yourself a reputation for inferior quality work. Actually, I'm speaking only for myself. I don't know how other artists feel. I've given up pricing my work and let someone else do it. Fingers firmly crossed, but all the feelings described above, firmly in place.
